Some spirits (souls) are among those first created (before the existence of this world and Homo sapiens) and originated solely from the Creator. More recently, spirits have originated in a process that includes both the Creator and human conception.
Because a newly-created spirit is not yet ready to guide a mortal life, they will be escorted to the spirit world and another spirit will attach to that lifetime. In the spirit world, the new spirit will be nurtured and introduced to their life as spirit, and then will begin a structured course of instruction on how to guide a human lifetime, being tested at each level. It is a serious undertaking; some of those who instruct new spirits are Sages who were among the first spirits to have been created.
A new spirit (they are more similar to young adults than to children) will likely spend a decade or more in the spirit world before attaching to their first human lifetime. After completing their initial education, they will shadow one or more human lifetimes to gain a better understanding of the process, and they will also continue to learn and perform tasks suited to their abilities.
When ready to attach to their first human lifetime, a young spirit will select the lessons to be learned and then make a request of the Creator, who will provide several for them to choose from. They will be closely guided by Master spirits to choose lessons and then a lifetime that will not be too difficult, as it is important that their first experience of the physical world be a positive one.
Once they have chosen a particular lifetime, a spirit will observe the family and situation and seek further education they believe will be helpful. They will formally attach to the lifetime shortly after birth, but usually will not fully inhabit the body until the child is between the ages of two and four and is capable of reasoning and making informed choices. Until then, the spirit will often be close but will also continue to learn in the spirit world, spending their time to best advantage.
